MONGOLIA

Eliza Ginn

During the summer of 2009 I traveled with staff from the Nature Conservancy to remote Mongolia. There I met with local environmental partners, rangers and herding families and photographed the stunning people, landscape and grasslands.

Mongolia has a population of fewer than 3 million people, and is sparsely populated with only 4.4 people per square mile (as compared to the United States’ 80 people per square mile). It hosts some of the most endangered plants and animals, including the Gobi bear, Saiga antelope and Siberian ibex. In 1778, Mongolian leaders created the first national park in the world. Despite solid environmental safeguards, mounting pressures from development along with climate change and deforestation has put the biodiversity of the country in danger.

“I find that by restricting ones view to the camera frame, a new perspective can emerge. As an adventurer and observer of culture, my understanding grows deeper when I look at the world through a camera lens.”Eliza resides in Portland, ME and works for the Maine Island Trail Association (mita.org) where she is often found on the coast messing about in boats with camera in hand.

Each limited edition print is available for purchase (framed or unframed). A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Nature Conservancy’s Mongolia program. To contact Eliza Ginn: eliza.ginn@gmail.com or 207-653-1266
