What is the purpose of Periodization?

Periodization is best described as an organized cycling of training aspects over a given period of time to result in improved performance in a given sport. The concept of periodization is based on building training to provide optimal performance during “the season” and consists of off-season, pre-season and in-season programming. Phases of training are meant to provide a change in variables such as frequency and intensity of workouts, focus on endurance, power & strength, and sport specific movement. Off season and pre season training are great for addressing any weaknesses or imbalances that may have developed over the previous season, thus avoiding injury during the athletic season. This type of programming will provide “peak” performance during the athletic season. Without a structured program, often athletes will burn out before the season begins or on the other side of the spectrum they may not be properly prepared for competition.
